Some hexie action

The weather is cold and drizzly here. Perfect for farmers ... and sewing. I love a rainy day. Having grown up on a farm, rain always meant rest from helping Mum and Dad and time to play. Rain still evokes that feeling for me. And so I have been playing:

I'm channelling my inner 1930s with some half inch hexies in pretty little prints. I am loving paper piecing - it is precise and methodical, which suits me just fine right now.

I have one small quibble: They look lovely right up until the time that I remove the papers. I don't like that the seam is showing through on the white hexies. Picky, I know! You can't see it so much in these photos, but trust me, it's annoying.

What are my options?
1. Push on and ignore it?
2. Start again with a thicker white fabric so that the seams don't show?
3. Line the back of the piece with white fabric and hope it minimises the seams showing?
4. Shelve it in frustration?
All suggestions are welcome. Just don't call me anal ;) I'm thinking I'll go with #1 and #3. Ain't nobody got time for #2 and my shelves are already too full with abandoned projects for #4.

  1. Answer this: Is your white fabric of the quality it needs to be, which is to address #2. If it is good quality fabric then I agree with the #1 & #3 plan. Furthermore, any quilting you do will probably be right in the area that is bothering you so it will be further concealed by the outline or detail stitching.
I think it is lovely but then it is so much easier to appreciate someone else's creation while viewing one's own handiwork with an intolerant microscope.
    Enjoy your efforts. We do!

    1. Awww Karee, you've most likely nailed it! The fabric I'm using is probably not the quality it needs to be. You have me squirming now, thinking I'm not going to be satisfied unless I go #2! Haha! I am only planning a cushion, so to start again is not completely ridiculous ... thanks for your thoughts :)

  2. Aside from the quality of the fabric, since this is a small project and probably almost done, why don't you lay the ones you have completed on some very white batting (or wadding as I understand you say there). I wonder if that would take the place of lining the back. Good luck!

  3. I'm with Lee, white batting will probably fix it. I have an almost identical WIP that has been abandoned since 2010, this has inspired me to work on it again!

  4. You could always use what you have done already to make a smaller project - smaller cushion or pin cushions. Then start afresh with better fabrics if you plan a larger project. Trying to undo fine whip stitching is not fun and will likely compromise the fabrics a little.

  6. If it's only a cushion I'd probably keep going. Some white iron on backing would probably solve it, and some quilting would help. Too pretty not to use them. Loved the rain in Mudgee too, and it stopped for me to drive to Sydney after work today.

  7. They're so beautiful!!! I'm with the group here -- I'm thinking a little batting behind it plus some quilting and you'll never notice those seams. Press On!!!

  8. I believe once it is quilted you won't notice it and you will love it.
