We interrupt our normal transmission ... for Book Week!

There are costume-challenged mothers all over Australia breathing a collective sigh of relief as they send their children off as their favourite book characters to Book Week parades. Can you guess who mine are? Please tell me you can guess!
EDIT: Yes, points to Janellybelly, Fiona & Maria for guessing Lola of Charlie & Lola fame for Littlest Blossie. We are big fans of Lola at our place. My son is dressed as someone more obscure. The bejeweled belt in the last photo is an enormous hint. Ask the nearest 9-12 year old boy, especially Australian ones, & they will probably know! EDIT #2: I am enormously relieved that Penny recognised Lief from Deltora Quest! This is a series of fantasy books written by Australian author Emily Rodda. Lief is the hero of the book who fights all every evil creatures imaginable in order to return each of the seven gems to the Belt of Deltora & thereby restore peace to his homeland.
D = diamond
E = emerald
L = lapis lazuli
T = topaz
O = opal
R = ruby
A = amethyst
A classic tale of good overcoming evil, but with lots of twists & turns that have you wondering all the way through. Great story, especially for boys, but more than a little scary at times!

  1. "I have this little sister Lola" - what a Fantastic costume, well done Mum!! We are huge fans of 'Charlie and Lola' in our house - I watch it to see if I can pick the fabrics used in Lola's dresses. Happy book week!

  3. Wow! Ros, they both look great. I guessed LOLA but not sure on your Son? I would say Luke Skywalker but would they know who I was talking about?

  4. Yes definately Lola, I don't think your son is Luke Skywalker as he has a sword and not a light saber. I have been discussing it with my son and we wonder if he is Wart from The Sword in the Stone?
    My son went as Percy from Percy the Park Keeper. Do you have those booke in Australia? They are lovely.

  5. Lucas was never great at the whole dress up think I don't know how many costumes I made that he wanted and then ended up not wearing. At least your 2 look the part.

  6. Oh Dear, where do I fit in? Yes I'm also a Mother with the costume thing this week, except ours is tomorrow and I've had a sick girl in bed today ... tomorrow's not looking too good. She'll be Hermoine Grainger one way or another, if she doesn't make it to school I'm determined to get her dressed up during a "bright" part of the day, she's gone to bed with little plaits to have crinkly hair, just in case. Gorgeous thing stopped me cutting up 4 metres of black homespun fabric to make the robe, "Mummy I'll be fine in the grey cardigan like in Book
    2, if I get to school at all", I love her for thinking of how much work I would have put into it. Salute to all the Mummy's out there who are determined to make their kids look great - take a bow ladies. Janet

  7. Hi!
    I LOVE the costumes. I remember dressing up for Book Week when I was a kid too. Now I am a teacher, and I must admit, we didn't get into the spirit of it that much this year. We had activities for grades K-2, but plain old school uniforms. Hmmm. Maybe the costumes again next year.
    By the way, is your son from Deltora Quest?

  8. I would not have guessed either, I have to admit. My children are all grown up now and I have left behind the wonderful world of children's books. You did a fabulous job with the costumes! As I will be a Nanna I had better stay tuned to learn more of the things a good Nanna should know about young children today!
    I enjoyed your children's art a few posts back....very talented!
    Take care

  9. I just came across this 2008 post - have to say that your superb belt should have been a giveaway! My 6 yo son decided today he will be Leif in his school's book week parade next week (2011!). As he said, "we'd better get to work mum". Your costumes look great and very identifiable - I fear that my version of Leif may be a bit slapdash, but I'll try to take inspiration from you...
